Introduction:

Basically the desert island metaphor is used for describing an utopia. I used this metaphor as an insulator for questioning how a woman acts if she manages to get rid of all boundaries (social, emotional, instinctive)

But when doing this I try to use the first act as a common introductory where the second act is can be played as 4 different points of view. And one of those 4 choices is the dancers choice. She can act and end the play as if she feels like to do it. This means this play will be played in 4 consecutive night for 4 different endings (and even maybe by different dancers).

Of course when you put some filming, projectors and transparent slide shows it seems like a hard project but who knows maybe someday someone can do it. And I'll buy my tickets and go to the shows.

Asia's Island
(Multidisciplinary stage performance)
Synopsis

Act-1
The journey started with a crew of 6 cheerful college students on a Sun Odyssey 49i luxurious sailing boat. Their route was from Honolulu to Papua New Guinea Port Moresby via Solomon Islands, like an big adventure around 4,000 miles.

First there will be a struggle with the ocean then Solomon Island and finally Papua New Guinea with new discoveries about life.

Asia is one of the crew members. Her father was a pure sailor and so he decided the name his daughter after the name of daughter of the mythological god Okeanos. He was very proud of her daughter for her courage in joining this adventure with her school mates.

But only on the 5th day of the journey a big storm broke. First the electric system completely malfunctioned, later main sails were torn and finally the rudder was completely broken. There was no way to control the boat or ask for help from the main land.

In their life vests also wearing their emergency bags with 2 days of necessary food and simple equipments on their necks they were waiting for the storm end. But it didn't end for 2 more days and in the and a huge wave hit and crushed the boat, they sank.

Now there is only silence and darkness. Asia fainted and dragged by the waves.

When she woke up she found out that she's on a beach under a very hot sun. She was exhausted but with her last energy she walked away from the sea a little and fainted again.

When she woke up again she realized that she was in a little shore in a small atoll. She ate some chocolate and drank the water in her bag. She was better and had some strength to stand up.

She starts to search for the boat and for her friends. There were no signs and nothing. She stars running shouting her friends names in tears. After some time she was exhausted again. She realized that here was one thing was clear, she was alone here.

She returns back to the place where she left her bag and for the first time she was aware of herself and worried about herself. For the first time she looks around and try to figure out where she is at he moment. She examines the bag the result was terrible. GPS, transceiver and the emergency signal device was out out of order. All she got was; flint stone and steal fire kit, a small fishing gear, a compass, a Swiss army knife, some water, 4 canned tuna fish, 6 chocolates.

Sunset was near and she need to prepare a place to sleep for her first night in this deserted island. She prepares a shelter under the trees on the shore, makes a fire, she prepares her sleeping bag and between many frightening sounds she falls a sleep.

Act-2

1000 days passed. For 1000 days she was doing all the same things. The island is rich on water and fruits, since it's very close to Ecuador the night and day times are almost the same. All her cloths are completely shattered. Her hair was cut badly but very shortly. But continuous swimming in the sea and the river her skin was shining in beautiful bronze color.

On the 1000th day she decided to prepare a ritual. She waited for a rescue ship or plane to come or any fishermen from the nearby islands and she is now sure that nobody will come to rescue her. She realizes that she has to admit her situation, she is stacked in this island and be there for ever. By this ritual she decided to make her decision about how she'll live from then on.

After this part there are 4 choices for how this play ends, I planned 3 of them but the 4th one will be the dancer's choice

Choice-1: Absolute Free

She reached the perception of absolute freedom, not only as a woman also as a human being. Exist in society, mate to reproduce, fall in love, not necessarily to love someone or something, always out of certain motives to do something just as human beings, to live only on its own, only to live to be happy. Also not devoting her life for anything, feeling life more and more inside and being more free for being aware of the moment.

She realizes that she don't have to miss anything. When she's hungry she eats, when she wants she swims, whenever she wants she screams or runs or sleep.

Neither she needs to be a mother nor she should try ensure the continuity of race. She doesn't need to sacrifice for anyone or anything. She obeys the nature and gets lost in the nature. She's now liked happiness formed in a body, in her body.

One night, when she was lying on the beach she feels like she just disappears between the starts and universe, and with a wonderful smile on her face she reaches infinity.

Choice-2: Hopeless Prisoner

She admits her loneliness for sure and cannot hold her tears. Now every moment her need for compassion, love and friendship grows more and more and becomes unbearable. Aspirations, especially the longing for a child is eating away her soul more every moment.

In the wildlife of the island observing the animals taking care of their babies is hurting her badly. She is like a slave of her instincts and the teachings of the society.

Neither beautiful sunsets, nor sunrises pleases her soul. The delicious fruits and the beauties of the island is no cure for her broken heart.

One night, when she was lying on the beach she feels like she's not important even as a sand piece in the universe. She stands up, walks to the sea and leaves her body in tears to the sea and disappears.

Choice-3: Warrior

The passed time turned her in to a warrior now. She doesn't care about being a female or a mother. She wants to rule the island. Breaking up her second class citizenship in the standard society, she's now like the empress of the island.

She built houses, fences, domesticate animals, kills the other animals for flesh or for security. She even invented a religion. Since she feels great joy during full moon, accept moon as her goddess and started to sacrifice animals on every full moon by a great fire at the beach.

When she realizes that she could beat any army around, she aimed to beat the last army; the sea surrounding her island. After a long time of hard working and struggles. She built a vessel with the primitive equipment she has and prepares for her last war. On one full moon night she sails away for beating this last enemy and gets lost in the sea.

Stage planning and usage:

Projected design stage:
Three sides of the stage covered with white curtains. The side curtains are of half size of the main curtain. Side curtains are connected to the main curtain with an angle of 110o . The 3 projectors are located above the stage and in the middle.

Hidden on the middle curtain there will be two cameras covering some arena on the stage where the dancers uses. Again hidden left and right curtains have cameras for one each. So that when needed dancer could be seen from different angles by the audience.

The curtains will make the decor for the island scene. Videos will show the shore, and the sea. So the audience will feel the three dimensions of the island.

Predicted flow:
Act-1
For the first act in a crowd of dancers entertaining (6-person team of friends), fun, excitement and the vast seas. The side curtains to describe the happiness of the boat and inside. In this 3-screen we see all the other colleagues. On the main curtain we see a route on Google Earth. The dancer stands in the middle as if she's in the boat and act accordingly.

As the dancer viewing Papua New Guinea from an atlas in her hand, we see the what she sees on the projection on the curtain.

First easy days of the voyage again shown from the curtains with the association of the dancer actually on stage and acting according to the video on the screen.

The storm moments also given by the videos and addition to that the whole life of the dancer from the childhood reflected on one of the side curtains (screens).

Dancers fight with the waves, swim with life jackets and emergency kit, exhausted and in a half-unconscious way hitting the beach and remove herself from the sea coast with difficulty is shown by middle right, left, discusses the curtains in a coordination (dancer leaves the stage in this section).

When it is dark the dancer actually comes to the stage and with the coordination center and side curtains slowly lit up the stage with a magnificent sunrise.

Asia is now on the island. And the audience can see the island almost in 3D from the three curtains (screens)

Followed by continuous movements of the dancer (collect wood, collect fruit, fish hunt, make fire, eat, sleep, wake up, watch the sea, explore the island), time passes. On an accelerated basis as a ceaseless sunrise, waves, clouds, fast transition from time to time, rain, sunset, stars, flowing through from time to time specifies the time in the form of the birth of months. In the meantime, fear, disgust, hope, despair, longing, feelings of sadness will be the feelings that the dancer will tell us in her act.

At the end of the scene Asia marks a piece of wood with his knife which is also one of the walls of her home, says "1000 it is, 1000 days have been full," and sighs "I can never leave hear, I'm stacked here" and ends with the first act.

Act-2
The whole setup stays the same but here the usage of the stage cameras start. Watching the starts, watching the sea, and talking to herself mainly her back turned to the audience is shown by the camera views on the curtain in combination with the pre-shoot video usage. Especially on the final scene.

Conclusion:
In this play I'm not questioning the utopia idea, I'm using the utopia idea to understand what will a woman do when she gets rid of all the boundaries keeping her as a prisoner (social, emotional, instinctive). For man it's easy to predict but women are far more complicated than men.
